Historic Tenterden Town Hall reopens following £3 million revamp

The historic Tenterden Town Hall has recently reopened its doors to the public following a comprehensive £3 million renovation project aimed at restoring and revitalising the Grade II-Listed building. The refurbishment, which began in October 2024, sought to address various issues the building had been facing, including rising damp, unpleasant sewage odours, and inadequate heating systems. Additionally, the lack of a lift had rendered the upper floor inaccessible, limiting the building's use.

Dating back to 1790, Tenterden Town Hall has long served as a focal point for community life in the town. With its reopening, the Town Council is keen to reintegrate the venue into the fabric of Tenterden, ensuring that residents and visitors alike can once again make use of this significant historical asset.

The renovation is not only about preserving the heritage of the town hall but also about transforming it into a vibrant hub for community activities. Tenterden Mayor, Cllr Jane Mills, expressed enthusiasm about welcoming the public back, highlighting the importance of the town hall in the social and cultural life of Tenterden. The building is expected to serve multiple purposes; it will act as a base for council operations, a licensed venue for weddings, and a centre for various advice services provided by Ashford Borough Council.

The newly restored town hall offers four versatile rooms for hire, catering to a range of needs. The Assembly Room can accommodate up to 140 people, making it suitable for larger gatherings and events, while The Meeting Room provides a more intimate space for smaller groups of up to eight. This flexibility is designed to meet the diverse requirements of organisations, individuals, and businesses in the community.

The investment in the town hall is seen as a significant step towards ensuring that the building becomes a sustainable asset for Tenterden's future. With guided tours scheduled for September, the community will have the opportunity to explore the enhancements made during the refurbishment and appreciate the historical significance of the venue.
