Improvement works to begin on Colonel Stephens Greenway in Tenterden

Improvement works are set to begin on the Colonel Stephens Greenway, a cherished walking and cycling route in Tenterden. The project aims to enhance accessibility throughout the year, ensuring that this historic path remains a vital link for residents and visitors alike.

Kent County Council (KCC), in collaboration with contractor Ringway, will be undertaking a resurfacing project covering 650 metres of the Greenway. This route serves as Tenterden's only designated cycleway and provides a vital traffic-free connection between St Michael's and the town centre. It also links to National Cycle Network Route 18, making it a popular choice for walkers, cyclists, and families seeking a peaceful and safe way to travel.

Funded through the Department for Transport's Active Travel Fund, the £150,000 scheme is designed to improve the path's surface, making it more manageable and accessible in various weather conditions. Work is anticipated to commence in October and is expected to take around four weeks, depending on the weather.

KCC has worked closely with Tenterden Town Council, Ashford Borough Council, and local community groups to bring this project to fruition. The importance of the Colonel Stephens Greenway has been underscored by various assessments, including a 2018 audit by Sustrans, which highlighted the need for improvements in active travel infrastructure. Additionally, this project aligns with Tenterden Town Council's 2024 Highway Improvement Plan, further emphasising the community's commitment to enhancing travel options.

Spencer Dixon, KCC's Deputy Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, expressed satisfaction about the project’s advancement, stating that the resurfacing will significantly benefit both residents and visitors. He highlighted that the Greenway's traffic-free nature is essential for promoting walking, wheeling, and cycling for everyday journeys.

An official from Tenterden Town Council also conveyed enthusiasm for the upcoming improvements, noting that the resurfacing of the Colonel Stephens Greenway has been a long-standing request. The council's persistent advocacy for enhancements to this important pathway showcases the community’s dedication to improving local amenities for everyone.

In addition to improving accessibility, the project is being conducted with ecological considerations in mind. The timeline for the works has been carefully planned to align with environmental recommendations to protect the route's natural features.

To ensure safety during the construction phase, the route will be closed to the public, with pedestrians and cyclists being diverted along estate roads. The community is encouraged to be patient and to take advantage of the alternative routes while these essential improvements are made.
