Kent & East Sussex Railway celebrates first graduates of new youth programme

A significant milestone was celebrated recently at Tenterden Town Station, where the Kent & East Sussex Railway hosted a graduation ceremony for the first cohort of its new youth programme. The event took place on a sunny Sunday, marking an important achievement for both the participants and the railway.

Eight young individuals, aged between 13 and 15, were recognised for their dedication and hard work in completing the programme, which focused on essential skills in railway operations and customer service. Among the graduates, three individuals excelled further by earning an additional certificate for successfully passing the assessment to become Assistant Travelling Ticket Inspectors. This achievement highlights the programme's commitment to fostering practical skills that can enhance future employment opportunities for young people in the community.

The graduation ceremony was attended by Tenterden's Mayor, Cllr Jane Mills, who served as the guest of honour. As she presented the certificates, the Mayor expressed her pride in the achievements of the young graduates and emphasised the importance of such initiatives in supporting the development of skills within the community. Her presence underscored the programme's value not only to the graduates but to the wider Tenterden area, where the railway remains an integral part of local culture and history.

The youth programme was co-ordinated by Tori Jones, who has played a pivotal role in shaping its curriculum.
