Kent & East Sussex Railway runs diesel-only over fire risk as Terrier loco 'Knowle' goes on display at Tenterden

The Kent & East Sussex Railway, a cherished attraction for both locals and visitors, has recently made adjustments to its service in light of the current fire risk conditions. In a proactive measure, the railway will operate diesel-only trains until 7 August 2026. This decision comes after the suspension of steam train operations since 23 June, a move aimed at mitigating the very high risk of lineside fires, which has become a pressing concern during the summer months.

The decision to shift to diesel trains is part of the railway's commitment to ensuring safety while continuing to provide a vital transport link between Tenterden and Bodiam.

In a positive turn, the railway is set to showcase the historic Terrier locomotive 'Knowle' at Tenterden Town Station on 5 and 6 August 2026. This event promises to be an exciting opportunity for the community, especially for families, as children will be able to travel for free when accompanied by a full-paying adult.
