Tenterden's first-ever Public Space Protection Order approved to tackle antisocial behaviour

Tenterden has taken a significant step towards enhancing community safety with the approval of its first-ever Public Space Protection Order (PSPO). This new measure aims to address various forms of antisocial behaviour in a large area of the town.

The PSPO, which is now in effect, targets several key issues affecting residents and visitors alike. Among the behaviours that will be restricted are street drinking, dog fouling, the dangerous use of e-scooters, loitering, and the use of foul or abusive language. Offenders caught violating these regulations will face prosecution or a fine of up to £100, underscoring the town’s commitment to maintaining a safe environment for all.

One of the more pressing concerns that prompted the Town Council to pursue this order was the reported use of catapults, which has resulted in harm to local wildlife and damage to residential properties. The council sought the PSPO following a public consultation process that highlighted community concerns about safety, particularly after dark. Results from the consultation revealed that only 38% of respondents felt safe in Tenterden during nighttime hours, while a significant 88% expressed support for the introduction of the PSPO.
